Nice camcorder, very small and the video quality are great for everyday use. Taking pictures is very easy, but when you hit the shutter, there is a one second lag while the camera switches from video to picture.

My biggest complain is that it does not use the standard mini USB connectors, forcing you to carry one more cable. Other than that, I would recommend this camera or newer models to my friends.

I've had a miniDV camcorder for years (and have accumulated many hours of miniDV tapes that I never watch and haven't imported). I got the Xacti to be an alternative to the miniDV 'corder for more spontaneous shooting and viewing of my kids' activities; I intended to still rely on the miniDV for the longer and more "important" shoots. But the Xacti performs so well (with the addition of a 8GB HDSD 15mb/s card), I never use the miniDV anymore.

And I use the Xacti as a camera more than my regular digital camera (but only because of the convenience of carrying the Xacti vs. the 12x optical zoom camera; the quality of the still pictures is good, but not quite as good).

I carry it all the time, which leads to my only complaint: the lens cap is not secure enough -- it gets knocked off much too easily. But even that doesn't detract enough from this little wonder to knock a star off the rating.

I have had now this camera for several months, but only now I had the time to used a little more often, so I decided to leave my opinion for future buyers. If you are looking to this device as an hybrid, you will make the same mistake you made. Still picture are just simply bad, doesn't matter if you are in low light or in plain sunlight. Of course the ones taken in low light are much worse than the one in sunlight, making them worthless. Maybe my standards are higher the other reviewers but I think a picture taken at ISO 200 should not suffer from heavy noise artifacts!! If you are shooting in sunlight and look at you pics in the cam monitor, they will look fine, but as soon as you will look at them in your PC, you will discover that if you can save 1 out of 10 you are lucky.

I guess video is fine for the type of sensors, and being a low resolution you can expect much. In video mode, the camera is really good to balance the white. If you need to shoot in low light, you better set the ISO manually to no more than 200, and activate the high sensitivity. This will allow for a minimum noise impact in your video. Another thing I like of the device is the responsiveness. It is really easy to start shooting videos, with almost no delay. So, if you care more about catching the moment but you are not very concern about the quality of the results, I guess this device will work for you. Another thing many people were excited about is the ability to take videos at 60fps. There is a major issue in this mode. Because the camera is operating at double the speed, the auto focus system produces a lot of click noise (hard to describe in other way) that is picked up by the mic. If you are shooting in a quite environment, you will be disappointed by the results.

Overall I like the feeling of the camera, and I really wish it worked as described. I would NOT by it again. I will probably save some more money and get a high def camera.

PS: other cons are the very short battery life, the almost useless image stabilization and the face detection features that almost never recognize a face, not even when you have it right on camera!!

If you are on a budget buy this one. Our family is very very pleased with the picture/video quality. Very easy to operate. Very compact. After we bought ours we were suprised to find how well built it was. Whether you buy this one or a different one I'd suggest a camera/video with a memory card. We have a 16gb memory card and we have 24000 pictures/16 hours of video. Very easy to download to our computer. Unless you're a professional you will not need any other camera/video.

It's very simple to use and you don't need to read a manual.

Multi use for photos and video so it's the only thing you need for travel. Waterproof makes it great for rainy days and any water related activities even you are not in the water literally.

You need this camcorder if you do a lot of outdoors activities. I have higher end cameras I take with me camping but I leave them in the trailer all weekend because I'm afraid they'll get damaged (like the last two!). This camera is VERY high quality construction, flip out screen hinge is tight and all the components feel solid. Definitely get extra batteries as the battery doesn't last all that long (maybe I need to adjust my screen brightness?? had not had it long enough to know), but with a large capacity sd card (bought an 8gb card for under 20 bucks on Amazon) you can shoot all weekend (the movie timer showed 6 hours of record time on an empty card)... I love this camera already, highly recommend it!

PS- the video review was what did it for me, those people did a great job!

This video camera is a steal for what it can do. I just got it and have been recording a lot of concerts and outings with friends and it shoots really good video. Its also great that it fits in your pocket. I still recommend carrying around a camera because the pics dont come out that good at nite, plus its kinda hard to have some stranger take a pic of you and your friends. By the time they figure out how to take a pic, the moment has passed. Its great that its waterproof, records in ipod format and that you can use sd cards to record on.

The things I dont like about it: I wish there was more optical zoom, the battery life is about 45 mins to an hour of continuous recording. The price of aftermarket batteries are cheap, but they dont last as long as the sanyo battery. The picture quality in low light conditions sucks. The color of the camera is kinda funky, but the things that it can do makes up for it.

Overall, I still recommend getting it. Great price, great video & sound quality, perfect size for carrying in your pocket, sd cards, cheap aftermarket batteries, and records in ipod fomat.

I like the Canon PowerShot so far. The face detection technology is a little wonky: sometimes it grabs a face, sometimes it ignores a face and goes for something else. Image stabilization seems to help a lot, although I still get an occasionally blurry photo if I move a bit too much.

I am not wild about the port cover for the USB connection. It's very cheaply attached and will probably break in not much time. The included software (ZoomBrowser) is very good and transfers the pictures quickly.

Ergonomically, the camera is comfortable and I don't have any trouble with the on/off button. I agree that it's disconcerting to have the lens stay out while reviewing photos, but as long as you're careful it's not a big issue.

Overall, I'd give the camera an A-/B+. Indoor shots are still a little difficult due to overexposure with the flash, but this camera is still a huge improvement over my 7-yr. old Nikon Coolpix. :-)

Both auto and manual settings that make taking great pictures easy. Easy and straight forward to use. I previously had a simple point and shoot digital and I really like being able to have the manual control options with the Canon SD850. The colors are true, and can be enhanced by changing simple settings. I only found that some reds in certain lighting sometimes need a few changes in the settings.

This camera is packed with great features, and has a terrific software package.

Can't see why they suggest this holster for this camera. No sooner had i put the camera in the holster for the first time than it slipped right out. Luckily the camera withstood the severe blow. This holster is almost guaranteed to cost you your camera: It simply does not fit the Sanyo camera it's supposed to be made for. Keep away.

Get a standard camera bag with zippers. I did. Now it's really protected. For example a Lowepro Edit 100 Camcorder bag which is what i got and fits perfect, head down.

I got this with my Xacti HD 1000 and it doesn't feel like it was made for this camera. It always feels like it's going to fall out and it did, luckily I was home on my couch messing around with it when it fell. I no longer use it and the little bag that comes with the Xacti works just fine for me.

I would not buy this case because it looks like its completely backwards of how I would want it... my preference would be to place it on my right hip where it would be easily accessible by my right hand, which is the only hand you would be using to shoot, correct? Why in the world would I want it to be on my left? I would have to take the camera out and switch hands constantly. The whole point of these small palm cameras is quick accessibility even at times when you are traveling and have only one free hand.

Also it looks quite a lot like a gun holster which I guess could be good or bad depending on what kind of 'look' you are after!

I'm in the US navy. I was wearing the case and camera on my belt clip while I was leaving my ship to go out on liberty. I took a fast step and somehow that shot the camera out of the holster, it fell on the deck and bounced once before it went over the side and into the water. GRRrr!!

It's a good camera so I managed to buy it all over again. As I wait to get it in the mail, I'm missing a lot of deployment ports to take videos from. This case is a very loose fit, and the camera will fall out of it and get all scratched up or worse.

I was very impressed by the features and capability of this camera, especially considering its size and price. The automatic mode delivers crisp, easy to take pictures with little fuss, and shutter lag is a non-issue. The lens zoom is great, and the image stabilization is very useful in long range shots.

The manual modes give a ton of options, and are very easy to use and access. For walkabout and general photography I definitely prefer this camera over a more expensive and bulkier DSLR.

I've owned each new version of this camera since the Powershot S2IS. For me this is a worthwhile upgrade over the prior version, the S5IS.

I'll start by saying that I am not a digital camera "power user". I just want good quality photos without a lot of hassle. This camera provides that, yet also provides a lot of room for growth with plenty of custom settings that I can use if I want to learn how to use them in the future (for example, aperture priority).

Pros:

- In initial testing, the face detection technology seems to work well. I can take a self portrait now and the lighting comes out very good. I think the technology has gone from buzzword marketing to true usefulness.

- One side benefit of the face detection technology is that it enables the camera to intelligently take red-eye out of pictures without using the red-eye reduction lamp.

- The flip-out and rotating viewfinder has always and continues to set this camera apart from its peers from other companies. It allows for less intrusive candid photos and has many other advantages.

- Thankfully, the SD card door is separate from the battery door as it was with the S3IS. Thank you Canon! There are times that I just want to take a few pictures, and now I don't have to open the battery door to take the SD card out and put in my PC's card reader.

- Low battery warning. I think this is the first version to have that and it's very welcome.

- 28mm -- I will never get another camera without wide angle built in. I have the Canon Elph 880IS too, which is a very powerful "pocketable" camera that complements this one well.

- Sharp 20x zoom. Pictures turn out very good even at high zooms. In an indoor-lit apartment, I can read fairly small print from a photo taken all the way across a room -- it truly is amazing.

- The picture quality is better at higher ISO's than previous models. Each model improves on this and this one definitely continues that. I haven't tried out the "I-Contrast" setting (on vs. off) but I can say that in some outdoor pictures that I have taken detail is good in shadow areas.

- Finally, a standard lens-cap. It doesn't have a tether, but you can buy a cap attachment from a camera store that sticks on the front of the cap. The one that I got has an elastic band that goes around the base of the lens. I also got a better lens cap which can now be done since it's standard.

- Controls ... I like the new placement of the controls such as dedicated on-off button and display button. I don't think I will like the scroll wheel but time will tell. For those not familiar with this camera, there is a dedicated video button so that you can take video quickly without having to mess with the controls.

- Weight and shape. I liked the shape of the S5IS a little better. This one seems too "boxy" and the grip seems too abrupt. It's bigger and heavier but not in a way that matters. It's expected with the new lens.

The only thing I would have liked to see improved is the size of the rotating display. It's usable, but the 3" one on my pocket SD880IS is much better, and competing cameras offer a larger display. In order to get a larger display though the electronic viewfinder would probably have to be eliminated which is something that many wouldn't like. I'd rather have a larger display.

I don't know if the compressed movie mode results in less quality because I didn't take movies with prior versions of this camera because the file size was larger. I like that videos take up less space now and I will use the video feature of this version.

Canon released a camera similar to this with HD video capabilities but it's not available, as far as I know, in the U.S. Check the Canon website for more info. if you want to research that.

There is not a way to screw filters on this camera as there was with the optional lens adapters available for the S5IS. It seems that Canon could have easily done this by threading the end of the lens but maybe I am missing something. I anticipate that Canon or some other company will come out with an adapter that will allow filters. My main use of filters was simply to protect the lens.

I don't know if the software is improved because I don't use it. If you want date / time stamps on your photos, you need to do it via software.

If you like this camera and are interested in a great pocket-sized camera to complement this one, check out the SD880IS. It has many of the same features such as the Digic 4 chip, face detection, wide angle, I-contrast, and in addition it has a beautiful 3" display.

I've emailed Canon about the absence of the string to the lens cap on this camera, and they said it wasn't incorporated because it would not work well with the lens hood featuring this model. Otherwise, it's a great mega zoom

I have been looking forward to the "S6 IS" coming out this year (after skipping out on the S3 and S5), and now it's out, with the name "SX10 IS". I think Canon wanted to show that this camera is a huge leap forward from the S5 IS, and it certainly is given the new specs.

Compared to the S2 through S5, the zoom is now 20x optical starting at 28mm instead of 12x starting at 35mm (much wider shots), as well as a 10MP sensor, up from 5-8MP, and Digic IV (instead of Digic II and III) for improved shots.

I tried out the demo model in the store, and some differences I noticed were:

- The camera is much taller and deeper to accommodate the huge lens, and does not feel as good in my hands as even the S5

- The body of the camera is very smooth compared to previous models, but it feels bulky compared to the S5

- The button layout is COMPLETELY different, there are no buttons on the front of the camera, MF and macro buttons are located in the back, you now press a button to turn the camera on and off (instead of turning a jog dial), the 4-way directional pad has been replaced with a clickable scroll wheel, also to enter playback mode you must press a button instead. I do not like this layout, but it does offer the advantage of being able to enter macro and MF mode using your right hand only.

- After taking a shot, you can view very detailed information about the shot (ISO, aperture, histogram, etc) which is a nice add-on

- The lens is marked on the top with approximate zoom levels and focal lengths

- Unlike the S5, the battery compartment is again separated from the SD-card slot, which is good

- The picture quality is better, thanks to improved high-ISO quality, so the pictures come out less blurry than on the S5. The sharpness and auto-focus at 20x is very good, with no visible distortion at any zoom level

I did not see the intervalometer function in the menu, so I assume it is still gone as it was removed in the S5, also no RAW support, and there is no custom firmware available for the SX10 (since it is Digic IV), look for that in the future. Movies are in .MOV format instead of .AVI, still 480p, and still one of the best "camcorders" around.

The MSRP is also $100 lower than the S5 was at launch, making this a terrific bargain for a 20x superzoom with Canon's great quality. My only concerns are with the size of the camera and the button layout. However, the huge zoom lens makes up for it, and the fact is it is still much smaller and lighter than a D-SLR plus wide-angle and telephoto lens. Overall, you can't go wrong with this camera, the quality is superb.

This camera replaced my old Olympus C2100, a formidable 10x zoom camera introduced 8 years ago that started the mega-zoom race. Have played with the SX10 IS for a week now and very happy with it.

Below are what I like:

-It uses regular "AA" batteries. Never buy a camera that uses specialized batteries no matter what people may tell you.

-It has a useful 28mm wide angle lens. This means you can include a whole group of people in a picture without standing too far back(such as in a small room). Most cameras (I say 90%) do not have lens this wide.

-You can zoom (optical & digital, with audio) while taking movies. Many cameras do not allow optical or audio during movie taking.

-It takes SD memory cards which is most popular (plentiful, cheap). Do not settle for cameras that take any other type of memory cards.

-It has a rotating LCD display.

-It is quick to take (and view) pictures and movies.

-Picture and movie quality (with stereo audio) is superbly competitive to any other high quality cameras.

Below are what I don't like:

-No grip: this is one slippery camera and I know I will accidentally drop it in no time. I like its size and weight but its grip needs to be designed accordingly.

-The LCD display is very easy scratched. Do not wear this camera with a neck strap with the LCD facing out, because your shirt buttons will scratch the LCD. Immediately put a protective screen on this LCD first; there are several protective screen or tape products available.

-The lens has no thread so you can't put on a lens filter to protect it from smears and dust.

-The lens cap has no tether or tether hole so there is little you can do to attach the cap to the camera. Canon, what was you thinking?

-I wish it can record movies in widescreen 16:9 VGA. It does not have HD movie feature but I don't need HD, I only wish widescreen VGA.

Currently there are several 20x zoom cameras available, such as the Olympus SP-570UZ and SP-565UZ, Casio EX-FH20. I've tried all of them, and eventually chose the Canon SX10IS as I think it gives you superb features and quality for an unbelievable price.

To my surprise, I stumbled across a SX10-IS from in a local store in Green Bay WI. Saturday Oct 4th. I bought it quickly. Amazon would have been my next step. (Cameras can be an addiction sometimes.) I have only been experimenting with it for 24hrs so far. I can't speak for its dependability yet. I will be comparing it to my old companion the S2-IS that has served me for 3 plus years and has worked for me flawlessly for many of thousands of pictures. These new pictures are a noticeable improvement in every respect. High ISO is greatly improved. Colors, highlights, dark areas, all are excellent. I haven't had a chance to do real testing for the edge sharpness or purple fringing. That is best left to the pros to check out. Photography has been a hobby of mine since before 35mm cameras had light meters built in. I know a good picture from a bad one. This camera's 28-560mm is what makes this camera like no others. With the 100 or so pictures produce for me so far, it looks a feels like a winner. I have to repeat so far. I know I'll be upsetting some SLR owners, (I been there, done that, and have a closet full of SLR equipment). If anyone is looking for a camera to just simply bring home the most pictures that everyone will want to look at, then this one is hard to beat. If I sit down and think of what I would spend to get slightly better pictures in the 28-560mm range, there is no way I justify the cost difference. I remember lugging and switching all the lenses around. This just is not necessary anymore with the new super zooms. I always missed my 28mm with my old S2-IS. Really, the 28mm is very useful compared to the normal 35mm in any brand of camera. And on the long end, you can't have too much zoom. I have accepted the minuscule loss in sharpness compared to an SLR's when I bought my S2-IS. I have brought home more great pictures since that time then I would have lugging all that stuff. 28mm-560mm is one heck of range to have at your finger tips. I got off the subject a little. Two things I am disappointed in. The miner one is it is heavy compared to my S2-IS. It probably is in the lens. Secondly, I can't believe Canon went to using the Apple .mov files for recording movies in this camera. This is clearly a big negative. So there it is, this great camera that is going to change forever what we can do with one single do it all camera, and then Canon goes and throws a big old horse fly in the ointment, with their .mov format movie recording.

**** UPDATE ****

The movie recording in the proprietary Apple (.mov) container means that you cannot directly edit your movies in Windows "Movie Maker".

"Movie Maker" is the editing program that at least 99 percent of the population has available for free at their finger tips, in every Windows computer. "Movie Maker" is excellent and very easy to use. Canon could have compressed the movies without using the proprietary Apple format.

ISO at 400 and above has improved. This means ISO 800 on my new SX10 is like ISO 400 on my S2-IS. Please keep in mind that this can be very subjective from one person to the next. I don't think anyone would be disappointed with the ISO improvement. Some of the forums are reporting even better improvements. We all need to see some reliable reviews on the SX10.

The quality at 20X is very good and will produce impressive pictures to all but the critics. 8x10 prints should no problem. Using any lens at 560mm needs to be used with care and a basic understanding of long lenses.

We need to keep this in prospective. This lens ranges from 28mm to 560mm. If a person is looking for this kind of range in one single lens, what are our options? Correct me if I'm wrong but I see only the SX10 and the Olympus SP570. Again correct me if I'm wrong, that a 28-560mm is not available even in a single SLR lens. So really I have no choice at this time. If I want to get a nice picture of that mountain range at 28mm and the close-up of the wild mustang before it runs away using 560mm, both from one lens, I have only two choices. (SX10 or SP570).

In addition to all this, because the high pixel count, now the digital zoom is useable with caution and can produce some surprising results.

The new "Wheel" control on the SX10 is not good and hard to use, I don't like it at all. It functions, but is very clumsy to use. Depending on the user, some users might not use it much.

I have never seen a perfect camera at any price and doubt that I ever will. So far I am happy overall, and feel I have quality fun camera that I will take more pictures than with any other choices that I could have made. I would buy it again.

PROS The picture is extremely sharp ! No question about it. Unlike the older version (the HD1000), this model is way more robust, less plastic feel and a strong metallic attach on the flip out LCD screen.

CONS the manual focus is a total joke ! First of all, it is not located on the ring of the lens but on the menu. Even worse, once selected, impossible to actually set up your focus as you are filming !! You would have to stop recording to set your focal length. Extremely frustrating as you get a lot of out of focus as subject filmed are constantly moving.

CONS I havent figured out yet, but footage seems to be jiggering when played back. Maybe has to do with the progressive mode ? Or my poor graphic card on my mac mini ? Or could be the fact that my 42" Samsung LCD screen doesnt support progressive mode ? Again, i will need to figure this out before complaining.

FINALLY, if i were you guys, i would probably get the canon AVCHD. It has a real focus ring. A tripod (or even a monopod) is a MUST when filming with the tiny Sanyo Xacti.

I bought this because I rarely use my expensive video camera to take videos of the kids and instead have thouhsand of pictures. I want both so I bought this little wonder. My wife and I are happy with it but there are a couple of things I wish were different. The biggest is the flash being a manual flip up thing. If you want to take a quick picture you need to think about what light you are in and flip a switch before shooting. The camera will then decide if it needs the flash or not but this is a pain if you are have used an automatic flash for some time. Videos look great and I got a 16gb card which seems to hold a lot of clips and pics and easy to transfer. My wife would also like to hear a "click" sound or noise when taking a picture. I have not figured that one out yet but honestly I have not taken the time to look in depth. So all in all a nice little camera for the $$ that is probably just the start of cameras that "do it all".

This is a fantastic little camera. The image quality is great, and I love being able to finally record true HD and have them look stellar on my HD TV. I think everybody agrees on what's right with the camera. I'll skip that, and go straight to the two glaring problems. Others have pointed them out, and I just have to add my bit.

Focus hunting.

Doesn't matter what I'm filming. Doesn't matter what settings I have. The subject will start off in perfect focus and the camera will always dart quickly out of and back into focus. For the life of me, I don't know how to stop it. If I set the camera on a tripod and film an empty room, there is no hunting. But add ANY movement, and the hunting begins. It is always brief, and it always recovers. But why is it there? My cheap cameras would sometimes lock to something else, and eventually would wander back. But this thing goes -POW- way out of focus and right back in quick blips. I've studied the clips and can't figure out what it is even trying to focus on. Whatever it may be, it never gets there. It isn't locking to something else. It is just darting out of focus and right back again. Some say they've noticed it, and it isn't annoying. It sure is annoying to me!

Image Stabilization.

Does it really do anything? I can't tell if it makes the images better or worse... or maybe does nothing at all. There seems to be no way of walking with this camera and then being able to view the results on a TV. Try as you might, there's just no way of holding the camera still enough. And even bracing myself with elbows locked to my sides, the image still wanders around. Just what does the IS do? And when does it do it? If I use a tripod, the image is great, of course. But even panning on a tripod creates image jiggles that I don't understand. The sad truth is that I've never owned a higher-end cam corder than this one, and I've never had one with worse IS. :(

But you know what? Even with these warts, I'm keeping the thing. If these two items could be solved (seemingly with a firmware upgrade) I'd be down-right giddy about this thing.

I bought this camera as I had fallen in love with the form factor and the fact that it records on SD cards.

I am a professional camera and Steadicam operator for a prime time network TV series. I was expecting a camera that had good quality, but did not have higher expectations, knowing that it is a sub 1000 dollars camera.

It did surprise me on how well it was built, how the menus were easy, yet highly customizable.

I loved the feel in my hands, the dock, pretty much all about it, including the good (but not fantastic) picture quality, except the image stabilization.

That unfortunately, was unacceptable. I could not get a shot without jerks and shakes that were excessive when played back on my 50" plasma. Maybe if you watch it on a small tv set, it will be OK, but for me it wasn't and I had to return it. I was very sad to do so, as I really liked the Camera, maybe in the future they will figure it out...

I bought this camera as soon as it came out. It is my third Canon and I have always been happy with this brand. It takes beautiful pictures and has a huge view finder. It is very clear and the stabilized zoom is a huge help in eliminating blurry pictures. If I had any complaints about the camera it is that the time between taking pictures seems to be longer than on other cameras, but the pop up flash is a huge bonus and makes it worth the wait. I would highly recommend this camera.

The feature that made me buy this camera was its image stabilization system. Friends who use digital cameras professionally all told me that Canons optical image stabilized zoom system was the best in its price range. Due to a slowly worsening tremor, this has evolved into an important issue.

The digital zoom is amazingly effective. Recently, I caught a game at Fenway Park. My seat was adjacent to the infamous "Green Monster". From that distance, I was able to take photos of players at bat, that captured detailed facial features. I was even able to get some very respectable images of players in action.

The camera settings are easy to use, and equally easy to access. The Auto setting is fairly idiot proof and does a good job under a wide variety of conditions. I found the SX110 to be solid, well built yet still small enough to fit into a laptop carrying bag.

I never imagined that I would buy anything other than a Nikon, but now I think this was one of the best purchases that I have made in a long time. It delivers on its promises, producing pictures whose quality rivals those of much more expensive digital cameras.

This camera probably has the best zoom lens among point and shoots under 300 bucks. The F2.8-4.3 works well with ISO400 without flash for indoors, concerts etc. AA NiMH rechargeable battery will give you over 100 shots without Flash. Flash recycle times are over five seconds. The macro mode pictures are excellent.

The biggest minus is the cheap feel of the camera. While SX100 was made in Japan SX110 comes from China. My Sony DSC-H10 feels like a tank when compared to SX110.

SX110 has one stop ISO advantage over Sony thanks to Canon's fast lens. For scenes when SX110 picks ISO200, DSC-H10 has to pick ISO400. This causes noticeable quality difference for 1/2'5 sensor cameras.

SX110 is slightly smaller than it's predecessor and DSCH10 making it easy to carry in front pocket of Jeans.

Was searching for a camera with an extended zoom and the resolution in the range of 8-10 MP. Caught hold of Canon SX 100 IS, but it vanished from the market before I could purchase it. Wanted a medium size camera so could not settle for Nikon P80/Canon S5 IS, because of its large size. Ordered Canon SX110 on the launch date itself with apprehensions about its features..but believe me, I am not dissapointed AT ALL.

Great manual controls for Aperture and Shutter speed make it a camera for Pros, while the Auto mode is wonderful for learning photographers. The zoom is great and the image stabilisation that the camera offers at the maximum zoom level (Even at 10x optical and 4x digital i.e 40x combined zoom) is awesome. The photos in low light during my recent trip to a hill station were good in the Night mode with lots of saturation of natural colours.

Face detection is also a good feature with the camera able to detect faces very very easily (I don't know how does it work, but it really works :-))

The Digital Zoom, unlike others cameras I have used, does not distort the image to a very large extent, thanks to the high resolution and the safety zoom features. I can upload photos to depict this.(I don't know how to do this in Amazon :-))

The battery life seemed ok only , as I was able to shoot around 200 shots with my Sony NiMH(2500mAH) bateries with flash. But the batteries are brand new and should gain more strength with a couple of charge-discharge cycles. But a spare set of batteries is always helpful.

I had a Nikon 5600 prior to this so wanted a middle size camera with extended zoom and manual controls, and glad to find SX 110 fit all my needs.

A thing that is missing is a Sports mode, which is a feature to shoot fast moving objects. I had this in my Nikon 5600, but could not yet find it on my SX110. Possibly the Manual controls for Aperture and Shutters could make this up for me. Still in the learning phase :-)

Highly workable by .. Alison (New England USA)
This is a new purchase, but I've been putting it through it's paces. It takes nice, in focus pictures, and the image stabilization is useful in avoiding flash shots, which need some color adjustment. It snaps much quicker than my old Lumix TZ7, and the large display is very nice, although a little difficult to see in bright sunlight. I miss the articulated screen that I had on my old S1 IS, but wasn't ready to spring for the S5 IS. For macro pictures I learned that I cannot zoom in if I also want an in focus picture. The scene options are useful, and I expect I will be using the Kids/pets option often. I took a serviceable video practically in the dark, and was pleased with the result. The long(ish)zoom is useful in a very portable size camera.

E2 - a worthy update to E1 by .. D. Brodsky ()
Before purchasing E2 I was torn between E1 and E2 but decided to go with a new model. There were no reviews on E2 other than a single one for Euro/Japanese/Canadian version of E2 called CA8 and that review blasted the camera's new sensor. Nevertheless, with Amazon's liberal return policy, I decided to take my chance and to get E2 instead of E1. After all, it is a second generation of this waterproof camera, and I thought the second generation is typically better.

If you are trying to decide between E1 and E2, here are the major differences:

The most obvious is a change of sensor.

E1 uses 6MP CCD 1/2.5 sensor

E2 uses 8MP CMOS 1/2.5 sensor.

E2 adds a 60 frames per second movie option (E1 was limited to 30 frames per second)

E2 adds face recognition mode. E1 has no such face detection mode

E2 adds a dedicated 'underwater' mode among several others. E1 did not have a specific 'underwater' mode.

First, I tried both the new 60 frames per second mode and the old 30 frames per second mode and I decided that I will be using 30 frames per second, I actually like the quality of 30fps mode better.

I then tried the photography mode. I took most photographs inside in tricky low-light incandescent and florescent light conditions, because I know these give ANY camera, including DSLRs such as my Canon 40D $1300 camera, the most problems. I upped the ISO to 200 and then to 400. You can see samples I posted here. BTW the macro mode on this baby goes to 1 cm!!!! I don't know if E1 had such super-macro to 1 cm. I found the photo quality acceptable and similar to that of other point-and-shoots using the same 1/2.5 and similar sensors. I felt that ISO400 was acceptable. I have not tried ISO 800 and 1600 yet.

E2 has following ISO range: in photo mode 50-1600

in video mode: 100-3200 in high sensitivity mode (3200 I don't believe you can select, but it does it).

The image stabilization feature is tricky, it is EIS, Electronic Image Stabilization, not Optical Image Stabilization, so when you use it, it crops a little bit on sides of your video and photographs, depending on which mode of EIS you use.

The sound is stereo and the quality is acceptable. The camera is tiny btw, I fit mine in case logic case I had from my Canon A75 camera.

I tried this camera underwater in my pool, both video and photographs. All worked fine, even shoots photographs with flash underwater, which makes for very freaky results.

Finally, some people complained that Sanyo has their own unique USB cable which is a pain if you lose it or don't have it with you, and cannot read it in ordinary card reader. WRONG. I did not even bother taking the proprietary Sanyo USB cable from camera packaging. The card works easily in my HP (windows vista) desktop's card reader. I downloaded PICASA 3 which I recommend. Picasa 3 will find, download, and play all photos and every video you shoot with this camera easily and quickly, just take the SD card, put it in your card reader and Picasa will do the rest. Very easy, so don't need to bother with this cable that comes with it.

Problems: Battery life is not impressive. Battery is tiny. I am used to Fuji F30's 500 shots per charge. This battery sucks. I charged the battery fully. I then took 80 photographs (some with flash), 4 or 5 2-minute videos and my battery showed 70% gone. You need a second battery, and hopefully there are some with more juice in it that the Sanyo one that comes with the camera.

I also wish the lens would start at 28mm and not 38mm as it would make easier to take pictures/videos of oneself without need to stretch your body away from the camera. Also my belief is that the flash only operates in photo mode and not in video mode. However, it is much better than its only competitor, Panasonic SW20, which does not have any flash at all

This camera rocks, but it does fall short for the title "Perfect Camera". It has all the bells and whistles you expect from a compact digital camera. This new one even has this great timer function with face detection. What's so great about it is that it will start the countdown after it detects a new face in the camera. The wide angle lens is great for group shots, portraits, and the usual stuff with scenery and people. Yet, it only has a 4X optical zoom. This is not enough if you have a wide angle lens. In comparison, a camera with a 36mm equivalent will have a longer zoom even with a 3.7X optical zoom, such as the new SD990IS. Canon Powershot SD990IS 14.7MP Digital Camera with 3.7x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black) Yet, it is good enough for everyday and for that special trip to Rome. But, forget about zooming in on that statue a few blocks away as it will not reach.

Although this camera has tons of features, it does not have enough manual functions for the enthusiasts. The new SD990IS has new manual functions to play with aperture, shutter speed, manual focus, and all the good stuff. I am guessing Canon will not add these manual settings in to the 800 line until later next year. This is too bad as the functions would make pictures come out even better with the ability to adjust settings to perfection.

All in all, this camera is great and would be a good replacement for any older 800 series such as the SD850 or SD870. I highly recommend it as long as you don't need any manual settings. The auto focus, DIGIC 4 processor, and the iSAPS will give you enough automatic settings adjustment to take quality pictures in a blink of an eye.

Perfection in a portable, feature-packed point and shoot camera by .. MW (Colorado)
This camera hits all of the sweet spots for those wanting a powerful, small "point and shoot" camera with excellent speed and picture quality. What sets it apart from other cameras in this category is the wide angle lens. You can fit more into the picture especially group shots and landscapes. Also, because of the wide lens, you can zoom in on your shots without cutting off objects or people on the edges. Most other ultra compact cameras do not have this feature. I have used Canon's other wide angle compact - the SD870IS and loved it. This newer model adds many upgrades to that model: 10 megapixels, fast and powerful Digic 4 processor, motion detection, 4x optical zoom, intelligent contrast, self timer with face detection, and a smaller size for pocketability. Even though it is an excellent "point & shoot" it is also feature packed and can be adjusted manually with many different options and settings if you want.

Things to look for in any camera in the compact/ultra compact category:

- Picture quality, of course

- Image stabilization so shaky hands don't ruin the shot

- Fast shutter lag times and shot to shot times

- Face detection software

- Good OPTICAL zoom (not just digital zoom)

- Great battery life

- Large LCD screen

- Adequate megapixels to enlarge and crop your images when needed. Also to print larger sized photos.

Shake Detection--MEGA O.I.S.(Optical Image Stabilizer) MEGA O.I.S., implemented in the lens, compensates for the blurring caused by hand-shake. Even slight hand-shake movement is accurately detected by a sampling frequency of 4,000 times per second, and compensated to produce sharp, clear images. It also works for zoom shots and macro shots, which are especially susceptible to hand-shake, and lets you shoot in dimly lit rooms or evening illumination, without a flash, to preserve the mood.

Motion Detection--Intelligent ISO Control The Intelligent ISO Control function detects subject movement and automatically adjusts the ISO setting and shutter speed to best suit the movement and light conditions. When it detects subject motion, it automatically raises the ISO setting and increases the shutter speed to prevent motion blur. On the other hand, when the subject is still and no movement is detected, it takes beautifully natural photos with a low ISO setting. Intelligent ISO Control gives you stunning images with ease because there is no need for complicated settings.

Light Detection--Intelligent Exposure The Intelligent Exposure function increases the exposure only in under-exposed areas by detecting the brightness level part-by-part in the picture. If the background includes the sky, which tends to be easily washed out, the camera automatically adjusts the aperture and shutter speed to keep the setting slightly under-exposed to prevent wash-out while brightening the darkened area by increasing the ISO only in that area. If the background of an indoor portrait receives insufficient lighting from a flash and becomes dark, the ISO sensitivity is raised in only the low-lit area to make it brighter without causing graininess in the subject's face. When Intelligent Exposure is turned on, the icon changes from white to yellow. In addition, you can adjust the effect in three levels in normal shooting mode: high, normal, and low.

Face Detection AF/AE

Face Detection--Face Detection AF/AE The Face Detection function detects faces and automatically optimizes the focus and exposure settings. It prevents the blurry faces that happen when the camera focuses on something in front of or behind the subject, and keeps faces from appearing dark when shooting indoors or against the light source. It detects up to 15 faces at a time, making it extremely convenient for group photos. Once the camera detects a face, Face Tracking follows it even when the subject moves around. This makes it easy to capture the person's face quickly if he or she is moving. It is also equipped with Digital Red-eye Correction. The camera takes care of the red-eye effect that often happens when shooting with a flash, to ensure attractive facial expression always.

Scene Detection - Intelligent Scene Selector When the camera's in iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector automatically sets the Scene Mode to either Scenery, Portrait, Close-up, Night Portrait or Night Scenery. The camera judges it from the various detection results such as focusing distance, inclusion of human face and brightness level of the circumstance. You are free from annoying settings every time scene changes when taking pictures with these most frequently used Scene Modes to get beautiful results even before you know it.

Subject Detection--AF Tracking Simply focus on your subject, then press the shutter button to activate AF Tracking. Even when you remove your finger from the shutter button, the camera continues to automatically keep your moving subject in focus. This keeps the focus sharp and blur-free when shooting active children or pets, as well as when capturing sports scenes or subjects in a moving object. It minimizes the shutter time lag so you won't miss those spur-of-the-moment shots, and helps to give you truly beautiful photos always.

The user can activate all of these useful, convenient shooting-assist functions by simply selecting iA mode. This makes the DMC-G1 the ultimate, super-versatile automatic camera for capturing clear, beautiful, mistake-free photos with ease despite its high quality image rendering capability as a system camera.

A Host of Creative Options
My Color Mode is a special option that gives free rein to the user's creativity. In My Color mode you can freely adjust the color, brightness and saturation parameters, while checking the Full-time Live View image to see how those adjustments affect the picture. This makes it easier and more fun to create interesting, expressive images. Adjust the settings that best suit the shooting conditions and your expressive intent, and then enjoy your own photography.

Furthermore, the DMC-G1 provides options of picture taste with the function called Film Mode. Each analog film has its characteristics such as with color, contrast, gradation and which affects on the outcome of the picture, in other words, it is one of the ways of expression. With the DMC-G1, the Film Mode allows you to choose the one that takes the best advantage of the scene or the subject you take out of a total of nine film modes including Standard, Dynamic, Nature, Smooth, Nostalgic, Vibrant, Standard B/W, Dynamic B/W and Smooth B/W, with capability of fine adjustment of contrast, sharpness, saturation and noise reduction. Users can also shoot the same scene in 3 different films using the new Multi Film mode. All these settings can be confirmed before you take the picture and the result is always as you intended.

The Full-time Live View lets the users check the outcome image in advance after adjusting the shutter speed, aperture or white balance. The white balance can be adjusted in the area of two-axis of coordinates precisely. And also the white balance bracket in 3 pictures either along with A(amber)-B(Blue) axis or G(Green)-M(Magenta) axis is now available for G1.

High Image Quality as an Interchangeable Lens System Camera The 4/3-type 12.1-megapixel Live MOS sensor featured in the DMC-G1 offers the best of both worlds--the superior image quality of a CCD sensor, and the lower power consumption of a CMOS sensor. Vibrating around 50,000 times per second, the filter repels dust and other particles.

High-Definition Networking
The G1 has an HDMI output terminal. When the G1 is connected to an HDMI-compatible TV via an HDMI mini cable (purchased separately), the user can easily enjoy a slideshow of photos taken with the G1. Other Convenient Features
When using the G1 in manual focus mode, the frame will automatically enlarge by around 5x or 10x (magnification can be altered by the front dial) for easy viewing in the Live View Finder or high-resolution LCD with Manual Assist function. This is a very sturdy case that fits the Canon SD1000 perfectly, with an easy magnetic close. As others have mentioned, it does make it too bulky for a man to carry in his pants pocket, but I was really just looking for something that would make me comfortable with tossing it in my purse and letting it jostle around with everything else in there.

The wrist strap is a tight fit through the hole at the top, but threading it through makes it difficult to retrieve the camera and take photos, so I usually just let the strap stick out the side.

Overall I am very happy with this product, considering how little I paid - be aware that one of the product descriptions is incorrect, though. The leather is NOT soft and the case fits nothing beyond the camera itself.

I wanted something that wouldn't add too much bulk to a tiny camera so I figured I need to go with Canon's case. The camera slips right in and stays secure and you can feed the wrist strap through the hole on the top. I then can just slip the camera in the front pocket of my jeans.

It is unfortunate there is no place to put any extra memory cards or batteries, but that is not the point of this case. It would require extra bulk and negate a compact case. I would have preferred something more like neoprene as the material, but I took what I could get.

Just got this camera as a supplement for my other Canon, which is too big to just throw in my pocket like this can be. I am very happy with the size, weight, and images so far.I would say it is the same size and weight as a deck of cards, I might try a card case as my camera case! The materials of this camera are very nice, with only a few problems for me right now. The entire case is made of metal, except the battery cover and cable port cover. I think the battery cover should have been made of metal also for durability, and it is a bit weak in holding it shut; seems like it will be easy to open it accidentally, but the battery is held inside with a notch, so its just annoying for now. And on the front, it would have been nice if the silver rings that make up the lens assembly were a matte finish instead of glossy to match the rest of the camera. Flash works good, 2-3 sec btwn shots, and 1 sec startup time, so fast!

Otherwise, I look forward to using this little toy for some great snapshots. Will update in the future.

I had previously owned a TZ3 , then I upgraded to TZ5 for the HD video recording capability with zoom. Overall the camera performs well. I like the new intelligent auto mode which is handy. The zoom is not fast enough like a camcorder also the focus is not fast enough but having said that I enjoy recording family videos. Overall good value for money. There is nothing to complain about the build quality. The on screen menu interface is pleasant to use.

This is a camera that you can take a picture of anything under any conditions. I tried a completely dark room with no lights on and I could get a picture just as if its all light up. The pic quality is amazing.

With 40 years of experience in photography,I know what I like in a camera.

I use a DSLR by choice, but I try to carry a camera on me all the time. I have done so since the 70's, digital, since 98. My new Lumix is wonderful!

Small enough to carry in a belt pouch without banging into everything, (less than an 1-1/2" wide) yet extending to 10x optical zoom when powered up. Carrying the camera everywhere allows me to document findings to share with my employer. The image quality is outstanding even at the smallest resolution. The .3mp 640x480 is particularly useful for getting pix emailed in hurry. The 9mp resolution allows for substantial cropping. Battery life is substantial and aftermarket batteries are available cheap!(2for $10) I have yet to explore the many of scene selections and shooting variations, yet in six weeks, have found no aspect of this camera I did not like.

This camera was a delightful surprise. It is small and easy to use, yet takes beautiful pictures. I am especially pleased with:

1) Uncanny flash performance - the flash looks like a joke, it is so tiny, but it really does the job. Closeups without being washed out, surprising distance range as well.

2) Battery life - also uncanny. You can shoot hundreds and hundreds of shots without depleating the battery. Fringe benefit of buying a camera from a leader in battery technology. (I bought spares but don't expect to ever need them).

3) Gorgeous LCD - best in the business, viewable in any light.

4) Virtual film types - there are several effects to choose from. My results have been startling - especially the dynamic B&W and Vivid Color settings.

5) Quick Menu - a tiny joystick gives instant access to many popular settings. Very cool and uncomplicated.

6) Multiple Exposure - you can use this for impressive artistic results.

7) Fit and finish are like fine jewelry, it's a pleasure to hold and to use

Other reviews have hit the basics, but these are a few of my favorites that may not be obvious from the other reviews.

Kudos to Panasonic for making such a ground-breaking product even when the competition is so good.

The Digital Camera I've been waiting for!!!!!! by .. Mark Millan (Brooklyn, NY)
O.k. Let me start off by saying that I bought this camera via 17th Street Photo's actual store in the photography district on 17th street here in New York City. I called (on Sept. 10th 2008) before I went to the store and I spoke with a super friendly man named Doug who told me that they got the silver and black ones and that they had 50 each. So, I went down there and immediately bought one. They have a 7 days no questions asked return policy so I tried it out like a crazy man. Keep in mind that if you mention the fact that on EBAY they have the price listed at $475, they will honor it in the store even though they have it priced at $499. Anywho, the purchasing experience with them was excellent.

By the way, I've been waiting for Amazon to have this camera too. I pre-ordered both of them (black and silver), and never received an email saying that they were finally available to purchase. So, I took things into my own hands and found it myself (which is explained above).

So, onto the previous testing and my current camera:

Before purchasing the LX3, I bought the fx500 from Panasonic (from amazon.com) and the Fujifilm f100 (from B&H) in order to try those out. I wanted to try the fx500 because of the 25mm wide angle lens, 5x optical zoom, and to see what recording movies at 1280 x 720 at 30fps was like. And, I tried the f100 because I was told at B&H that the f100 was the best non-noisy camera to shoot indoor shots without flash (FYI the best movie option on the f100 was at 640 x 480 at 30fps so I had no desire in trying that). I'll get to the results in a minute. Before those two, I was a Canon Powershot sd500 owner for more than 5 years and loved the camera, but I needed a new one for my honeymoon that is coming up on 10/12 for Hawaii.

Results of testing:

FX500: 25mm wide angle was awesome, 5x zoom was nice but focusing was a problem even after trying to focus 3 times (keep in mind my hands were steady as a rock so it wasn't due to camera-shaking). the movie quality at 1280 x 720 at 30fps was a nice improvement from my powershot sd500's 640 x 480 at 30fps, but in the end the actual quality and sound wasn't as eye popping improvement. Picture quality was very noisy, no matter all of the tinkering that I tried.

F100: yes, the picture quality indoors without any flash with this camera was better and less noisy than the fx500, but I ultimately did not keep this camera because of the poor movie quality, wide angle only goes to 28mm, the LCD is small and it's resolution is horrible.

So, sorry for the wait, but I thought I'd be as thorough as I possibly could about my review before the review.

LX3:

Keep in mind, I'd say that I'm an advanced beginner digital photographer. So, after owning the LX3 for almost a month, I simply have to say that I am SOOOOOOOO happy to have finally found the digital camera I've been looking for. I've read all of the digital camera websites out there, gone to the brick and morter stores to ask specialists directly, gone out and purchased digital cameras to test hands on, etc. etc. to finally come to the pleasure of owning the LX3.

What I was look for was a compact digital camera that had:

-Excellent wide angle: at 24mm, it's the widest I've ever used, and I cannot go back to a camera even with 28mm ever again. the 24mm on this camera is SICK! it blows 28mm out of the park. I haven't noticed any barrel distortion at 24mm. if wide angle is the main thing you are looking for in a compact digital camera, LX3 is where you will need to stop. and it doesn't stop there. if you get the lens adapter and purchase the wide angle lens, you'll be able to even go to 18mm!!!!. I haven't gotten that yet. Oh, I definitely do no mind that this camera doesn't have insane optical zoom options. I'm totally happy with the 24mm-60mm range. I found out that I personally didn't even use the zoom options that much when I had the sd500 canon that it's range was 35mm-115mm.

-Low f-stop: Finally the LX3 is the camera that steps up to the plate to offer an f-stop starting at 2.0. The slowest you'll see on the other comparable camera companies are at like 2.8.

-Excellent indoor no flash quality: If you use the "iA" mode in a low light situation it will most likely automatically use ISO400 to take the picture and in the darker parts of the photo (like shadows, etc.) there will be noise, which is common anyway. But, if you use the "P" or "A" modes and change the "+/-" with the "Q.Menu" joystick, it will lighten up the photo and reduce the amount of noise. I found this out on my own, and I've been INSANELY pleased with the difference. So, all in all, in indoor low light situations, I now use either the "P" or "A" mode over the "iA" mode.

-1280 x 720 HD movie quality: The fx500 had 1280x720 HD quality at 30fps, while the LX3 has 1280x720 HD quality at 24fps. And honestly, the LX3 resolution LOOKS and SOUNDS much better to me than the fx500. Movie after movie that I take, they look and sound amazing. i LOVE the movie HD option on the LX3. My advise, I bought two 16gb extreme 3 sdhc cards from amazon and I'll have no worries about recording speed and space issues.

-Easy to use manual controls: It took me no time to learn them. Easy breezy for a photographer at my level (again: advanced beginner)

-Easy to hold: I actually use the around the wrist cord that came with my powershot sd500 and that's fine. The LX3 comes with a around the neck strap (which I don't use). It does not come with an "around the wrist" cord. Maybe I'll use the "around the neck" strap for days that I would go on hikes or something like that. This is NOT a pocket camera. More of a "around the wrist" camera.

-3.0inch 460k resolution LCD: Best LCD for a digital camera I've ever used, and it's AWESOME. I'd rather have this than a 3.0inch 230k resolution touch screen LCD that the FX500 had.

-South of $500: Bought it at $475, no sales tax.

...and the LX3 met all of those requirements.

CONS: You do need a cap for the lens (it comes with one and a cord to attached it to the camera). Initially, I'd say that was the only semi-annoying thing, but I've already gotten used to it, and it's no biggie at all. It's a little tough taking vertical shots, but again ... not a big problem at all.

Any questions let me know. I've easily taken north of 2000 shots already of all different types. Honestly, I'm insanely pleased with this camera. Oh, I read in another review about noise at iso400. If you really want to keep a shot taken in iso400 indoors without flash and there is still noise in it, there is an AMAZINGLY helpful plugin used in Adobe Photoshop that you can get called "Imageonic Professional Noiseware" that does an amazing job in totally removing it.

Finally found the digicam to replace my DSLR. No, it doesn't have high ISO performance equal to any DSLR but the f2.0 lens and image stabilization more than compensates. I also got the Panasonic 18mm wide angle lens. Well worth the money.

In all, a great little system that's good enough to have me selling off my DSLR for our needs.

The greatest surprise? How well that tiny little flash works. It's far more powerful than I anticipated and works great even in mid day fill flash. A remarkable camera.

This camera is just a joy to use.

A real gem of a camera ... but don't expect image quality miracles by .. Pseudorandom Person (San Jose, CA)
In the last 6 years I've used a couple of compacts which I've since got rid of after upgrading to DSLRs (Canon XT and then 40D). For a while I was waiting for a compact that I could carry with me anywhere I want, and particularly to parties and other social occasions where bringing a DSLR is really not an option.

When this camera was announced it really looked like a dream compact for me. Fast, wide and optically stabilized lens is ideal for low-light indoor shots. The design is stylish and beautiful, the camera is quite compact and it has all the controls an advanced amateur would need.

Further the sensor is essentially as big as they get in compact cameras and with almost reasonable 10mp (still about 5mp too many but not as bad as 12-15mp you would get in any other compact with a comparable sensor).

I've had the camera for a couple of weeks now (and shame on Amazon for not having it in stock a month after it appeared in some other big stores). I like it a lot and the camera delivers on most of Panny's promises. Here are some of the experiences.

1. The image quality is certainly and noticeably better than the ulracompact cameras (like Panny's own FX series). It is however still a compact camera ... meaning there is visible noise even at ISO 80 and lots of noise at ISO 400. However noise reduction algorithms seem to be doing quite a good job and ISO 80 pics look very nice ... sometimes almost like a DSLR. And even at ISO 400 most shots are good enough to keep. In general the output from this camera is comparable to my 40D at 8 times the ISO (that is 80 on LX3 is about 640 on 40D and 400 LX3 is a bit better than 3200 on 40D). Fortunately, with fast lens and image stabilization I almost never need to use ISO above 400.

2. The camera is very responsive and the autofocus is fast and seems accurate.

3. Changing ISO through the menus is a bit of a pain but a variety of useful ISO regimes are provided. In general controlling all the options is not very easy ... but I guess that's the compromise you get with such a small camera with a large LCD.

Update: it is possible to simplify ISO changing by reassigning a button for this purpose. The drawback of this is that now reviewing pictures becomes more cumbersome.

4. Aspect ratio switch on the lens is more useful than I thought ... saves quite a lot of cropping.

5. White balance is not very reliable ... but I can live with it

6. Shooting in RAW+jpeg is fast enough but annoyingly neither Lightroom nor Photoshop recognize the LX3 raws. The supplied software is not so convenient (and I don't want to deal with two programs for processing my pics)

7. The camera is quite a bit bulkier than it might seem (and the given dimensions are misleading since they do not include the lens and other protrusions from the main part of the body). It is not pocketable both because of its size and weight.

8. The macro capability of the camera is really excellent.

9. Having user customizable preset regimes on the dial is very useful and quite a luxury not present even on Canon XSi DSLR (shame on Canon!)

Overall it's a great compact camera: in my opinion certainly the best on the market by a margin (I've studied the market very thoroughly). It is in the same league as Canon G-series (which I owned back when they were the best and liked a lot) but fits my current needs much more than a Canon Gx. I also think it's a real bargain at around $400.

But it is still a compact camera with a sensor 1/8 area of most DSLRs and 1/20 of full frame (mostly pro) DSLR. So those expecting miracles like close-to-DSLR quality or usable ISO 800+ might be disappointed.

A quick update in response to a comment:

1. At widest setting of the zoom there is quite significant distortion especially noticeable in 16:9 regime. There is also noticeable loss of sharpness in the corners. This might not look good in some shots (like if a straight like or someones face is close to the border) but nothing too bad for most of the shots.

2. HD video is very good for a compact. There is no zooming, no auto focus and sometimes exposure adjustments are not very smooth. So I'd not recommend to treat it as a camcorder. But overall it gives detailed and reasonably smooth video (well not quite 30fps smooth). I've just made a quick comparison with Canon HF10 dedicated compact camcorder (which is as good as they get these days). In bright light LX3 cannot quite match the 1080p detail of Canon. But in relatively dim light it is about as good. Also LX3 has a huge advantage in wide angle. All dedicated consumer camcorders have widest angle around 40mm which is much worse than 24mm of LX3.

Another impression which I have with LX3 and certainly did not have with other compacts is that it is a tool worth learning and investing some time and experimentation. My pics with this camera keep improving even the first ones were already decent.

Compact that thinks it's a DSLR by .. Hotspur (New York, NY)
I've owned a lot of digicams including a Canon 20d with a slew of "L" lenses. The DMC-LX3 is the best of the bunch. I've had it for over a month bringing it on a recent trip to Sydney as a backup to my dslr setup. After the first day I left the dslr in the hotel room and spent the remaining week with the Panasonic. This is not a point and shoot and allows me to be as creative as I want to be (I can finally get a nice bokeh with a compact!). However, unlike the 20d where I can get clean shots up to ISO 1600 the noise is definitely noticeable above 100 with the LX3. Save for that I have no other complaints.

This bag is sturdy, but it can (as other people have noted) only hold a camera body plus small lens with hood or medium lens without hood. Currently I can fit my Canon 40D with 50mm and have plenty of room leftover.

We didn't see any reviews that specifically noted this fits the Nikon D60, but ordered one anyway. It fits just fine with the basic single kit lens, and a UV filter. It's just as advertised and a good way to protect your camera when traveling light. It's an added bonus to have a generic brand instead of flashing a "Nikon" brand around. In these days of small point and shoots, it's nice to be able to be more discreet when out to take photos.

Though I have invited lots of giggle and comments due to its unseemly shape (of course it's an established one for a long time!), it has perfectly done what it's meant to do - protect my Nikon D80 SLR even with a 18-55 mm lens + Sunlight filter + the lens cap on. It just about fits exactly like this.

The one star reduction in rating is due to the fact that the zip causes some issues, now and then. It's not as flimsy as to come off or anything like that - just a bit difficult to pull it through sometimes.

I compared the Panasonic TZ5, Canon SD870is, Fujifilm f100fd. The TZ5 has the best features of all (nice screen, nice zoom, high-def video). But I ended up returning both the TZ5 & the SD870is. The f100fd has the brightest indoor images of all, and that's the most important feature I look for. The SD870is' indoor image is a little bit brighter than the TZ5, but still behind the Fuji. If you're really into higher-quality video & longer zoom, go for the TZ5.

Panasonic Lumix TZ5K by .. shutterbug (California)
This camera is exactly fits my bill for size and perfomance. The optics are superb (though not up to my 1940 Leica :). The colors are very good and there are a remarkable number of settting to chose from (and learn.) I've used Nikon and Cannon equivalents the Panasonic more than holds its own by comparison. I've even been able to show my 88 yr. old mother how to operate it - the only problem being getting it back!

It's not a small, thin camera but, it is far more portable than an SLR and a bargin at the price.

I've had this camera for about a month now, and am thoroughly in love with it. I love the huge zoom and the more than adequate wide angle. I love how quickly it powers up, and cycles between shots. I love how long the battery lasts. I love the quality of the shots with the Leica lens. I love how easily the zoom lens (the 'zooming' speed can be adjusted to match the user's desires) precisely travels.

The camera has a plastic body, and probably wouldn't handle being dropped real well. I'm not sure about the construction of similar class offerings by Olympus, Canon, etc. But the camera seems to be pretty well-made in terms of the motor and computer. I get the sense that if I treat it well, it will treat me well.

My research led me to believe that I would get the best quality pictures with the easiest interface - at the best price to boot! - with this camera (of any super zoom). So far I haven't been disappointed.

Purchased this camera after doing research on super zooms, viewing several models and reading reviews of the Panasonic FZ18 which it replaced. The FZ18 received top super zoom ratings in several reviews. A key factor for me was the 27mm wide angle zoom; I have found 28mm wideangle a very useful feature for family, architecture and landscape pictures on my 35mm SLR. The FZ28 promised improvements to the FZ18 in image processing and high definition video with zoom. I have used the camera for about a month and I am very pleased with its performance. Image stabilization is superb--I have been able to take clear pictures at maximum zoom in low light. Pictures in a variety of lighting conditions have been very pleasing. Resolution is very good. As reviews of FZ18 discussed, the small sensor displays noise in low lighting, high ISO, but I find it not objectionable in pictures that I have taken(family photo album). This camera will replace my 35mm SLR, several lenses for the SLR and a camcorder as a light weight and versatile travel companion. The Silkypix software bundled with the camera is a very capable and easy to use photo enhancement product--there is a bit of learning curve, but after some experimentation and learning I find it easy to use and it has produced excellent results.

Great camera - no brain necessary by .. B.R. (California)
I bought this camera for the 18xzoom which is just great! It also works well for the "point and shoot" at close or far range and if you wish to do the adjustments yourself, you can. It is light enough to wear around your neck when travelling and the photos I developed had wonderful detail, close or far. Great buy for just over $300.

Lumix FX28K A Great Camera by .. OB Joyful (USA)
I was looking for a camera with a super zoom (18X), little shutter lag (which has always bugged me with digitals), relatively light, RAW photo capability, image stability, face recognition and large LCD screen. This camera was one of the few that gave me all of those features plus a series of menu screens that are intuitive and easy to follow. Have used this camera for several months and so far have found it to live up to all its promises. Looking forward to taking into the Amazon (the river) next month.

I have had my FZ28 for about 3 weeks now and I am very happy with it. This is an extremely versatile camera with very good image quality. The highpoint of the camera for me is the huge zoom range it is capable of. The image stabilization works wonders at full telephoto (18x), and sharp, hand held shots in average light are very possible, if not routine.

So far I have taken mostly outdoor landscape, and full zoom photos of wildlife. The landscape images are sharp and well exposed. I had a little more trouble with the full telephoto wildlife shots as many of these were taken in less than full sunlight conditions resulting in less sharpness and less color saturation than I like. I was able to do some post processing and improve many of them, though. I'm hoping as I use the camera more my technique will improve and I can get sharper telephoto shots.

I also had the opportunity to use my FZ28 at a dimly lit coffee house to shoot some video and stills of a friend playing live acoustic guitar. I really wasn't able to get any infocus stills because I didn't want to use a flash and disturb the performer or the other patrons during the performance. I did take about 7 minutes total of high def video by placing the camera on the table in front of me. I was very pleased with the results. Fairly smooth video capture and decent sound considering how little light was available. I am going to make a DVD of the videos for my friend.

I have also shot some macro photos with impressive results. This thing focuses so close it is like having a 10MP microscope! My friend asked me to take an extreme close up of his eyeball (weird, I know). His ophthalmologist has got nothing on these photos! They are amazing. I converted the photo to black and white and cropped it super close for him. He has it as his desktop background on a 22" monitor! Very striking.

The reason I didn't give this camera five stars is there is a fair amount of noise present in all photos even at low ISO settings. I have a large format 13" x 19" printer so I am more aware than most people of the effects of noise on a large printed photo. I have to do a fair amount of software smoothing (which results in a loss of detail) to be able to print clean photos at that size.

In addition to the noise problem, I also have had some issues with recording video with the camera (or subject) in motion. If I slowly walk around my apartment taking video in average daylight the camera has a very hard time following the motion and staying in focus, especially if I zoom in and out some. I love the HD video option but I am disappointed the output isn't a little better. Also, it is important to buy the fastest SD card you can afford. I have an "A-Data" 8GB Class 6 "Turbo" SDHC card (cheap: $17.50) and I have had the camera stop after recording about 45 seconds of HD video, and give me an error message saying my card is not fast enough to keep up with the video capture. This only happens occasionally and I think it must depend on what you are taking the video of. I didn't have any trouble taking video at the dimly lit coffeehouse but I got these errors outdoors at full zoom while taking a video of a seagull having a snack.

Even with those 2 problems I heartily recommend this camera, and from what I have read it is the best in the long zoom consumer camera category.

I bought this camera specifically for a cruise I'm taking my family on. I bought it with the Canon WP-DC24 waterproof housing for scuba diving. The camera is very thin and light-weight, but loaded with so many features, I'll never use them all. The 3" LCD screen is HUGE and easy on older eyes for setting up your shots. The 10mp images are great to begin with, but this camera allows you to alter the image and colors in a multitude of ways. My kids like the black and white images with just one color isolated in the photo - really trick. You can slip this camera in a back pocket, ready for any situation. It's built like a chunk of stainless steel - definitely Canon quality. Can't wait to take it underwater!

I spent a lot of time researching the canon cameras before making my selection. (I had a canon camera that I loved a few years ago until it stopped turning on... then I switched to a Sony cybershot and was NOT satisfied, so I wanted to go back to Canon). I've had the camera for about a week.. so far it's been taking great pictures. I've been taking the same shot (on auto) with the Sony and the Canon to compare the pictture quality. The Canon has been getting the shots a million times better than the Sony. (Some of the pictures on the Sony just came out either all black or all white).

The Canon has been also doing a great job of using the flash appropriately on auto mode... I also like that it's been taking clear pictures even if the subject is moving.

Some of the pictures I took on high ISO did come out focused but grainy... but I'd rather have a grainy picture than a completely blurred or unrecognizable picture like I had with the Sony!!

It took a couple days to get used to the controls... the turn wheel does take a little bit of time to get used to the sensitivity, but I feel much more comfortable with it now. There are plenty of modes and options in the manual mode if you want control over your pictures.. but I have to say, so far I've been very impressed with the auto setting. The "kids and pets" setting has been also impressive to catch moving subjects without blur!

I was looking for a reliable camera to take good pictures even indoors and with moving subjects... So far so good!!

I've had this camera (Canon Power Shot SD790) about a month now and just want to say that I love it! It takes great pics and is easy to use. I like the size of it and how it looks (which I didn't expect to like)... nice and comfortable to hold, easy to take in a pocket or purse. I've had no problem with the wheel on the back ... I still have to study what all of the features/icons are used for yet, so at this time, I am not using it to its full potential. Uploading the pictures to the computer is easy. Takes good pics and of course I LOVE the size of the viewfinder!

This is a great camera and Canon continues to improve there lines with each new released camera. I installed a 16 gb card so I can take numerous photos and many movie clips. On paper, this camera sounds great. It looks good, the black body is slick and it feels good to hold. It takes AA batteries and has a 5x zoom. All very nice. But none of that matters because it's terrible. Image quality is poor- too noisy at any ISO. And it's just so slow... really slow to focus, and incredibly slow between shots using the flash. I don't expect miracles, but by the time this thing cycles, your subject has already gone home. Most pics are blurry, grainy, dark, off-color. Maybe one in 5 will be decent. Yes, it is a cheap point and shoot- but other brands at the same price point are worlds better. Oh- and that Leica lens may have meant something in years past, but now it's just a marketing tool. Just read the pro reviews. This camera is not worth your money. Stay away.

This is a terrific camera! It is so easy to use and the instructions are very easy to follow. I love it! The only negative comment I have is that the AA batteries wear down very quickly even with the camera turned off. It is best to get rechargable batteries or take them out of the camera when you aren't using it.

Major points:

1 In some cases (usually in dark or very dark conditions), the camera produces completely unacceptable results, with small white "bubbles" appearing throughout the shot. I have researched this and there are a couple of notes on the web that complain of how the lens may accentuate "dust dots". Understand I have verified this on 2 different cameras, sending the first one back the day that I got it, only to have the same thing happen with the second. [This is the only serious negative in the mind of this reviewer, and bubbles will not be an issue in most photos.]

2 The general sharpness of the images is noticably inferior to some other point and shoot cameras, such as the Canon SD1000, which I also have. This difference is completely inconsequential for printing 4x6 photos but can easily be seen for example, when displaying at large sizes on a PC. Still, to many people this is probably a non-issue.

3 The general layout of controls, menus, etc. is very well done. To me (and this is subjective), it is much better done and more intuitive than what you see on the point and shoot Canon cameras.

4 The software with the camera is okay, but I like the Canon software better.

5 Panasonic support has sucked in my attempt to get help. I registered my first camera (which I later sent back) online. Later, I filled out a form on the Panasonic site to request help with the bubble issue. It has been eight days since, and I have received no answer from Panasonic. Additionally, the nearest service center to me (Georgia) is Illinois. Luckily, Panasonic devices have good reliability and so you will probably never have to deal with their "support team".

6 The feature set (zoom, manual options, etc.) is clearly good compared to other cameras in this price range.

7 For whatever its worth, I have decided to keep the camera. Honestly I would be very enthusiastic about it if not for the bubble (i.e., dust?) issue.

I am happily using a Lumix FZ30 but wanted a pocket camera with as much zoom as I could get for a reasonable price. I looked at a lot of different cameras but the 5X zoom with image stabilization was a major selling point. Then I was pleasantly surprised to discover all the other capabilities built into this camera and am more pleased than I could have expected. The size is perfect for me; taking photos with even smaller cameras, as good as many of them are, always makes me worry about dropping them.

Still taking some time getting used to this camera, but it is handy and easy to use. Cannot back light the picture in Auto setting and constantly changing settings. Not for the professional photographer, but a good point and shoot. I liked it because it still uses conveniently available alkaline or (NI-MH) rechargeable batteries. Zoom and LED are good and it's a good value for the price.

I have owned 3 digital cameras before buying the Canon PowerShot A590IS. This is hands down the best camera I have ever owned and I have owned 35mm SLR cameras as well. The ease of use, the controls, the features, even the software that came with this camera makes it the best I have ever owned. The picture quality is phenomenal, even when shooting moving people indoors with flash. I take this camera with me everywhere and have taken over 450 pictures within the first 10 days that I have owned it. I am very pleased and would highly recommend this camera.

I have had both the A570is and the A590is. They are nearly identical. I do like the video modes on the A570is and it is curious that Canon reduced the quality and FPS rating on the video. Other than that, they are both superb cameras for the money. As for the flash issue that people keep reporting about. I don't understand how people expect normal cheap alkalines to be adequate. If you want the batteries to last anytime at all and have a reasonable flash recharge you have to have HIGH capacity rechargeable NiMH batteries in the range of 2400mah. If you do that you will find this camera a pleasure. If you try to cheap out and get by on the crummy alkalines from the drugstore this camera is going to be MISERABLE.

Please do yourself a favor and spend about $20 on a nice set of decent high capacity rechargables and a charger and its advisable to have at least four batteries that way you have an extra set of rechargables in your camera bag at all times. I did this on a trip to India with the A570 and with those high capacity batteries and the extra set on hand I never had problems with flash recharge time.

Otherwise, this is an excellent camera. It takes nice, clean pictures most of the time. Of course, it is not up to DSLR levels but I dont' expect that. At this price though it really is a superb camera. I like mine alot.

The Nikon Coolpix S52c - A Great Point And Shoot Camera With Wireless Features by .. Mark (NY, NJ, CT USA)

The Nikon Coolpix S52c 9MP Digital Camera Zoom with Wi-Fi (Vibrant Black), has all the good stuff that's included with the S52 plus the added wireless antenna and related features. Certainly it's brother, the Nikon Coolpix S52 9MP Digital Camera (Midnight Black) is a great all-around point and shoot camera. Both offer great performance and value that is best in class. While I originally got the basic model, for only $30 to $50 more this guy gives you a great wireless feature. Even if, like me, you don't use the wireless upload much now, at the discounted Amazon price it's worth having for the future.

Canon's newer models have been steadily adopting some of the features that Nikon has had in it's Coolpix S series for years, such as the 3 inch screen and scroll controls. I still prefer the Coolpix overall out of point and shoot models in this price range, but the Canon's have some advantages and wider popularity. When it comes to the wireless in this version Nikon leads the market with this feature.

The screen on this camera is an AWESOME 3 inches of clear and durable optical lens quality glass. This has the nicest screen out of any point and shoot camera out there, though the opaque controls on the Canon's screen are slicker. You may want to get a screen protector. But careful handling of my S50 has proven to me that the glass is very durable and not easily scratched.

Functions And Features

There are some interesting functions, included red-eye correction and image cropping. Once again, most people will be loading their pics on their computers and then dealing with those edits. Still, it's nice to be able to do them. These types of functions have become almost like minimum requirements for top point and shoot subcompact cameras.

The control wheel lets you scroll through your photos when displaying them on the screen for review. It only takes one button to delete a picture. It's also easy to access all the menu functions. Switching between camera mode and video recorder mode is just as easy, and reviewing your pictures via play mode is accomplished with one button as well.

The zoom on this camera is internal as with all S50 and S51 models. That means no waiting for the lens to zoom in and out, and no worries about the mechanical issues with those external lens extension cameras. That makes it easier to accept the 3x optical zoom. Digital zoom should be ignored when making your purchasing decision. Always compare cameras to each other with the optical zoom in mind.

This is a huge plus for this camera, and helps to maintain the slim profile. Some of those super-slim cameras aren't nearly as thin when they are turned on and the lenses are sticking out. There are thinner cameras, but none of them are as affordable and as packed with features as this one.

This is an update to the S50 and S51 versions and adds more megapixels (9M!) so that you can produce prints up to 16X20. More megapixels never hurt anybody. :)

Picture taking is good, and if you get a faster memory card it will be better. There is definitely a lag though, and using the light-hold then click technique worked best for me. The Auto settings are good enough for most basic uses. But low light and nighttime situations just don't perform as well with auto. So the short answer is, if you have to shoot in low light, set the ISO manually! There's also a "High ISO" option that seems to work ok, but setting it to 1600 seemed to work best overall.

Testing the wireless upload feature has convinced me it can perform well for some people. But there is a lot that goes into connecting to a wireless access point. Getting the pictures up on the website is the easy part. Configuring access to a secured wireless access point took some time. Clearly, unsecured Wi-Fi is a piece of cake. After taking a little over 1 hour to set it up once, I can say it was well worth it. I don't think I'll use this often, but it will do in a pinch. Uploads are too slow to be used for video, but can be used for a few pictures easily. Once again, uploading is slower than I would like but will do in a pinch.

The video recording features are pretty similar to prior models. The video quality is great, but sound quality could be improved. Video quality depends on your memory card quality and speed even more than pictures. And rest assured, this card is SDHC compatible so choose a nice class 6 card till the faster class hits the consumer market later this year. And also keep in mind that your computer probably isn't SDHC compliant (unless it's very new) so get a set with and SDHC reader included or transfer pics from your camera and not from the card.

Comparing The S52 To The Competition

Canon obviously has a few models that rule this space, best among them being the SD1100 IS and the SD790 IS. I actually still prefer the 770 over the 790, but whatever. There are good reasons for choosing any of those, but none of them have the internal lens. If you want that feature, the Nikon stands alone. For regular shooting conditions, Canon's image processing system is faster and more reliable. But the low light performance of the Nikon is better than the lot of them.

The body of the camera is nice and thin. When you consider that the lens is internal and does not protrude, this guy is thinner than almost everything out there, including the Casio Exilim.

When choosing between this camera and other options, you need to be aware of a few points. The Sony Cybershot T300 10.1MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom (Black) is a nice camera that also performs well and perhaps has a better responding auto-detection mode for low light situations. But I tested the S52 by setting the ISO manually to 1600. The results were somewhat surprising and produced better quality pictures in low light than Sony's auto setting. Obviously you can also manually set the T300's ISO, but the differences are negligible at that point.

Other things to consider is that you must use Sony's proprietary Memory Pro / Duo, which is more expensive with fewer speed options available. The T300 has a thin body, but the sliding lens cover adds considerable thickness and I personally find it annoying. In addition, the T300 is much more expensive and not even close to the S52 in terms of value. In fact, the Canon's are also more expensive relative to features, and Nikon really is the best bang for the buck here.

The Nikon Coolpix S600 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Zoom (Slate Black) has a widescreen capability that may appeal to some and 1 megapixel more for a total of 10. When you add in the greater zoom magnification, that camera is a great option for many people. Just keep in mind that the S600 does have an externally articulating lens, so it's much less compact than the S52 when actually in use. I am just too hooked on this internal lens to use the S600 full time.

The first real con you should be aware of is that your battery will need to be recharged after a few full days of use. That is pretty normal, but it did annoy me at first that I didn't have a spare battery. So get yourself a spare battery and keep it charged, which is good advice for any camera. Because this uses one of those proprietary batteries, it doesn't offer the ease of use that comes with models that use AAs like the P60. The other con is that you have to buy a little case for this camera, which seems like something that should be included.

Review your options with a mind towards the kind of shooting you need to do. Bottom line, get yourself this camera if you want to have a nice camera for everyday general use. This camera is durable, easy to use and loaded with features. And if you don't mind a few more bucks, the added wireless feature is a nice extra that will no doubt become more common with other entries in this group planned for later this year.

This camera is really great. The size and weight are perfect. It takes wonderful photos indoor or out. The LCD display is large and clear even in sunlight (a problem with my other digital camera). Soy un fanatico de la fotografia, pero no soy muy bueno con las camaras en el modo manual, asi que compre esta camara porque me gusto el zoom del lente y la cantidad de megapixeles. Creo que es una camara que vale la pena para aquellas personas que necesitan aprender de fotografia antes de saltar a una camara tipo SLR, asi si no te gusta no inviertes tanto dinero y puede ser utilizada por cualquier persona en tu familia. Lo unico que esperaba fuera un poco mejor era la calidad del video, pero al hacer unas tomas al aire libre es muy ruidoso el sonido por el viento y la calidad deja mucho que desear.

This is an expensive point and shoot camera. I just assumed a company as classy as Nikon would include basic photo editing software. PHOTO EDITING SOFTWARE IS NOT INCLUDED. So you better have some from your old camera. I guess that's why the in-camera editing is touted so highly. I think I will return this camera and get a Canon that comes with good software. Nikon recommends on the phone that you buy their newest, less than friendly software.

This camera is an excellent piece of equipment from Nikon. You must learn to use it before you critize or return it. It has a nice sharp focus. The streaks you see or read about in the samples or prior reviews are due to the user having the exposure compensation on a positive setting. This makes the picture much brighter than it needs to be. The compensation results in over exposed and streaky shots. Please note the situation you are in and beware; for example if you are in direct sunlight you would not need to use the exposure compensation. Camera is very intuitive and I would consider it user friendly. Just give yourself a chance and read the manual before you post negitive reviews. For the price you are getting a real decent camera. I am even pleased with the digital zoom which I used at an indoor concert. The VR realy works and helps you to keep you camera shake down to a minimun. Also try using the VIVID or More VIVID settings . I believe you will be pleased with the outcome. I owned many SLR's over the years and I bought this camera to use while I am getting over a cranky back. This gives me the leisure to get 27mm to over 460mm without carrying a bunch of expensive and heavy lenses. Also the 4X digital gives you even more flexibility to reach subjects you could not reach without an assortment of expensive and weighty lenses.

Having owned many Nikons, starting with the original Nikon F SLR, and having been a professional photographer with NASA in the 1970s, I long ago gave up carrying a heavy bag of multiple camera bodies and several lenses. I bought the Coolpix 600 to have something I could stick in my fanny pack and because there are a bunch of great cameras available (makes your head spin) I based this purchase on a key capability -- a wide angle greater than the usual 35mm equivalent and considered Nikon, Canon and a few other makes. Owning a Coolpix 995, and being an unabashed Nikon fan, the Coolpix 600 won out. One has to marvel at the electronic wizardry in today's cameras -- vibration reduction (hand-held shots that are sharp at as low as 1/4 sec shutter speed!), 10 megapixels and an interface I'm familiar with. Actually, it's even simpler to make changes than the 995. Of course, this isn't a Nikon D300 (my next purchase if I can justify it), but in the meantime, the Coolpix 600 is a camera I can carry easily and takes great pictures with all the advantages of the latest electronic features in an almost too small package. I do miss a viewfinder, but am essentially very happy with this purchase. It is a perfect compromise. I broke it in during a trip to Chicago and it will get a thorough workout in a couple of months in Dublin and Cornwall.

I've had alot of compact digital cameras (I seem to have a penchant for losing them), mostly Canons and Sonys, but this little Nikon is by far the best. It takes the sharpest pictures and most of all, it's free of that annoying split second delay that you find on most digital cams. The battery life is decent, but it's a good idea to buy a second battery and keep it charged in the little cloth Nikon case you can buy with the camera. It fits in a shirt pocket and is ready to shoot at a moment's notice. I absolutely love it and recommend it without reservation. I'm a long time Nikon shooter and have had a 5 different Coolpix compact digital cameras and have been quite pleased with the product design, software and most importantly the image quality. When my kids bent the lens on my P3 I was psyched to order the S600 - the specs looked terrific and it was oh so pocketable. The wide angle, high ISO and lightning fast startup all work as advertised. The big issue is shutter lag and auto focus. I tried many settings, the bottom line is, especially in indoor shooting, you press the shutter and nothing happens for a long time..... In Auto Mode, it also seemed to pick the wrong thing to focus on. Maybe with all of the "intelligence" the processor is thinking too much about what to do - I'm not going to try to figure it out - I'm shipping it back to Amazon. The other thing is the overall feel and quality of the product. The screen is huge and has good contrast and resolution. The rest of the camera body and especially the controls, are cheap and feel like they could fall apart at any minute. The battery door is flimsy, the battery and SD card slot are way too crowded and the cover for the cable connector would not stay closed. Come on Nikon, you have a great brand that lots of us trust - why put out such a cheap product? They could have made this camera 10% larger overall in size and made it 10% more expensive to put it into better fit and finish and shooting performance and it would have been the perfect compact high performance.
